Could the present aspirated pronunciation have existed in the popular speech, and have failed to manifest itself in the infinitely varied cacography of the time,—especially when it is considered that in 1675 the aspirated spelling of ‘ tion’ was the prevalent form in which the juvenile depravity manifested itself?4 We must, however, confess that the weight of direct authority upon this point is weakened by the following consideration.
