A filmmaker, usually a director, who exercises creative control over his or her works and has a strong personal style.

It’s not the sort of thing anyone might have predicted for the cheroot-chewing Man with No Name who graduated from Sergio Leone’s spaghetti Westerns to become a hard-boiled enforcer named Dirty Harry Callahan, but Mr. Eastwood stamped his films as an auteur from the start with 1971’s “Play Misty for Me.”
