thin strands of volcanic glass, formed when lava is thrown into the air by the explosion of a volcano.

A small amount of tephra was collected over the weekend, but it was a significant increase over the amounts collected at the end of last week; the tephra consisted of almost two-thirds fresh Pele’s hair and spherules and was concentrated near the vent by the weak winds.
